Minister of Transport speaks to Michigan Governor about hazardous materials on bridge

Canada's Minister of Transport spoke with Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer about the transport of hazardous materials on the Ambassador Bridge this week.

Michigan Department of Transportation (M-DOT) approved a plan to permit additional classes of such material to be transported out of Michigan via the Ambassador Bridge.

"I will be stressing the concerns that the residents of Windsor have made and MP [Irek] Kusmierczyk has made to me and the federal government because we will play whatever part we can," said Minister of Transportation Anita Anand.

Despite the call, Anand insists that the federal government does not have jurisdiction to restrict transportation across the bridge and onto Windsor's streets.

"Oversight and jurisdiction of this issue rests with the Province of Ontario just as it does the State of Michigan on the other side of the border. This is not a federal issue from a roads and highways regulation standpoint," said Anand.

During the M-DOT approval process, the City of Windsor objected to the change but the federal and provincial governments did not make any submissions.

The new regulations came into effect at the end of October.
