With some help from the provincial government, the Slovak Cultural Centre in Windsor will be able to preserve traditions for future generations.
Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie revealed a capital grant worth $24,600 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
"The Slovak Heritage Foundation works tirelessly to preserve the unique traditions, language, and customs of our Windsor-Essex Slovak community for future generations and for the benefit of our region," said Dowie on Friday. "This support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation is about more than facility upgrades. It's about strengthening cultural identity, celebrating diversity, and giving people of all ages a place to connect with their heritage."
The grant helped pay for new cabinets to display museum artifacts and traditional customs for the Domovina and Rozmarin dance group. The centre was also able to buy portable dance mirrors, a better audio system and a camera security system.
"We can focus more on building for tomorrow and developing cultural programs that everyone in our community can enjoy," said the President of the Slovak Heritage Foundation, Peter Guba.
The Slovak community has been an active part of the Windsor-Essex community since the 1920s.
Last year, the Ontario Trillium Foundation invested almost $105-million into 732 community projects.
