Windsor City Council could change its flag, building illumination, and proclamation policy when it meets on Monday morning.
A report to councillors recommends the city forego making proclamations and lighting up city hall in the future, and limit its flag policy to just the Canadian flag, the Ontario flag, the Franco-Ontarian flag, and the city's municipal flag.
The city adopted its current flag policy in 2022. It was put on pause in November because of construction in the City Hall Civic Esplanade, and the administration took that time to review it.
The current policy is popular. Of the 425 applications since the policy went into effect, 345 were approved, 79 were denied, and one was withdrawn.
The report acknowledges that some groups in the community won't be happy about the change, but says the policy takes staff away from other work, poses a reputational risk, and opens the city to the possibility of litigation.
During the review, staff looked at policies across the province. They found London and Burlington are reconsidering their policies, Chatham-Kent no longer does proclamations, and other municipalities, like Leamington and Lakeshore have done away with their policies altogether.
