WRH expands stem cell transplant program

Windsor Regional Hospital can now offer a new stem cell transplant for cancer patients.

The Autologous Stem Cell Transplant program rolls out this week for patients with multiple myeloma.

"This will provide a platform where we can give care to patients closer to home. We can treat them with better therapies that are better tolerated, that have better quality of life and will also allow us to foster research and learning," said Dr. Sahar Khan.

The Windsor Regional Cancer Centre Foundation raised approximately $300,000 to purchase the new equipment and send staff for extensive training for the program.

It's expected to benefit around 30 patients over the next two years.

The treatment themselves will be funded through the Ministry of Health.

“Access to advanced cancer care close to home is essential—not just for better outcomes, but for the emotional well-being of patients and their families,” said Andrew Dowie, MPP for Windsor–Tecumseh. “The launch of the Autologous Stem Cell Transplant Program at Windsor Regional Hospital is a major step forward, ensuring Windsor-Essex patients can receive the specialized care they need right here in our community.”
