Wildfire smoke triggers special air quality statement in Windsor-Essex

Not only is Windsor-Essex under a heat warning, the region is now also under a special air quality advisory.

Smoke from wildfires in northern Ontario is moving into the region, impacting local air quality.

The advisory is expected to remain in effect until Tuesday morning.

Environment Canada said the smoke may trigger common symptoms like eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches, or a mild cough. Should those symptoms become more serious or develop into wheezing, chest pains or severe cough, it recommends seeking immediate medical assistance.

Seniors, young children, pregnant people, infants, and those with chronic health conditions may be more susceptible to the smoke.

The agency also recommends keeping windows and doors closed where possible to protect indoor air quality.
