The Ministry of the Solicitor General has announced there will be an inquest into the overdose death of a 21-year-old man at the Southwest Detention Centre in Windsor.
Nathaniel Krug died on March 10, 2021, after he and another inmate, who had also overdosed, were transferred to a hospital. The other inmate survived.
The inquest is mandatory under the Coroner's Act.
Krug was awaiting trial on firearm and attempted murder charges at the time of his death.
In September 2022, another inmate at the jail, Luc Bouchard, pleaded guilty to charges of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking in the death. A Windsor judge sentenced him to 4-and-a-half years in prison, but with time already served, Bouchard will spend three years behind bars.
Just the week before Krug's passing, another man, 33-year-old Eric Dennis, died under similar circumstances, and there was an inquest in June into the death of 31-year-old Joseph Gratton, another overdose death at Southwest Detention Centre.
The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Krug's death, and the jury will make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths.
The announcement did not say when the inquest will be or where. Those details will come at a later date.
