Housing starts continue to lag in Windsor

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reports that housing starts increased 14 per cent year over year across Canada last month; however, in Windsor, the numbers fell again.

After a 45 per cent drop in housing starts in May from May 2024, they dropped again by 54 per cent in June.

Construction started on 42 new single-detached homes in June, compared with 58 a year earlier, and 126 multi-unit projects compared to 305. In those categories, that's a drop of 28 per cent and 59 per cent respectively.

So far this year, ground has broken on 150 single-detached and 265 multi-unit projects, totalling 415. That's down 61 per cent from June 2024, when construction had started on 1,065 units.

Across Canada, housing starts are up four per cent so far this year, while in Ontario, they're down 25 per cent.

Looking at seasonally adjusted annual rates, the number of total housing starts in Windsor this year is 1,880 compared to 781 by this time in 2024, an increase of 141 per cent.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
