Windsor-Essex Pride Fest kicks off

The 2SLGBTQIA+ flag flies at Windsor City Hall, marking the beginning of Windsor-Essex Pride Fest.

The flag raising not only marks the beginning of the festival but also acts as a symbol of support and solidarity to the pride community.

"It's just showing how much allyship there is in this city, city council, with everyone that says we see you, we hear you, and we're supporting you," said Wendi Nicholson, president of the Windsor-Essex Pride Fest.

The flag is flying in the southwest corner of City Hall Square. Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens said the city is still waiting for a new flagpole to be installed in the new civic esplanade.

Pride Fest activities start on Friday, August 1, and continue until Pride Day on August 10, which features the Pride Parade on Ottawa Street and the marketplace in Lanspeary Park.

"Over the years, the community is just embracing us more and more every year, and the allies that come out, the families that come out, it's so great," said Nicholson.

Organizers expect 8,000 people to attend this year's events.
