Thanksgiving is time to break in the new green bin

As we move into Thanksgiving Day Weekend, the Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority hopes you'll give your new green bin a try.

Collection doesn't start until October 21 in Essex, Windsor, Lakeshore, LaSalle, and Tecumseh, but now is the time to start filling that bin up.

It states that the bin is for food waste, including items such as turkey bones, fat, skin, produce, and peels. By using the green bin, residents should be able to cut their garbage output in half and extend the life of our landfill.

At the same time green bin collection starts, the City of Windsor will move to biweekly garbage pickup. Garbage collection in LaSalle, Lakeshore, Essex, and Tecumseh won't change.

Residents can find out what their collection schedule is by downloading the Recycle Coach App, checking their municipal calendar, or going to www.ewswa.org.

That food waste will be used as fertilizer on farmers' fields and for renewable energy production.
