OPP continue to charge impaired drivers in Essex County

The Ontario Provincial Police continue to take impaired drivers off the roads they patrol in Essex County, collaring two more allegedly impaired drivers this week.

On Sunday night, officers were patrolling on Erie Street South in Leamington when they spotted a vehicle without its headlights on.

The officer activated the cruiser's flashing lights, but the driver didn't stop. Instead, they drove through a stop sign and almost hit another vehicle.

When the officer spoke to the driver, the man appeared to be impaired, so he was arrested and taken back to the detachment for further testing.

A 40-year-old Leamington man faces two impaired driving charges, one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and one of refusal to comply with a demand.

In addition to those charges, the driver also faces 11 charges under the Highway Traffic Act, the Liquor Licence Control Act, and the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act. Those charges are for disobeying a stop sign, driving a motor vehicle with alcohol readily available, and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.

Officers stopped a second driver late Monday night for speeding on County Road 2 in Lakeshore.

Once again, the officer noticed signs of impairment. A 35-year-old Windsor woman tested in the warning range, so her vehicle was impounded and her license suspended for a week.

The woman was also charged with speeding.
