Windsor police have demonstrated a commitment to providing mental help to any officers who may need it.
Police Chief Jason Crowley announced on Friday that the service is receiving $25,000 through Ontario’s Mental Health Supports for Public Safety Personnel program.
"While our members focus on helping others, it’s equally important that they have the support they need," read a social media post from Windsor police. "Our members and their families will now have access to specialized mental health resources."
According to the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General, first responders such as police officers are at a higher risk of occupational stress and injury due to the often traumatic and emotionally-charged calls they frequently face.
"The experiences of first responders and public safety personnel can impact everyone around them, including colleagues, family members, and friends," said the Ministry. "Understanding the importance of mental health can help you recognize early signs and risks to mental health and well-being."
Anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder are frequent issues first responders face.
