Lambton gateway display 'builds up expectations': warden

Lambton County's new gateway sign along Highway 402 took centre stage Thursday morning.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the sign that was erected about three months ago near Nauvoo Road in Warwick Township.

Lambton Warden Kevin Marriott said it's one of those little things that help create an aura of a good place.

"When you have a nice sign when you're entering a county I think it just builds up your expectations. It's just like an add in a newspaper or on the radio that makes people think."

Council first discussed putting up a sign back in 2013 before authorizing the initiation of the design and site selection in 2016. The cost of the project was just over $200,000.

Marriott said almost every throughway into larger municipalities like Lambton all have these signs.

"And it is important to put ourselves out there as a community to move to and invest in and expand. So, things like this do help, we think, create interest for people to move to Lambton and maybe businesses to build."

Marriott said people are finally discovering that Lambton is a very reasonable place cost wise, whether it's just living or expanding. He believes the county has it all.

"We have the lakefront for some of the best places to build a house in Ontario -- you can't get better beach than what we have. Lots of water for industry, because that seems to be number one is the water and power and gas. So, we have a nice place to live as well as a good place to build a business."

The construction contract was awarded to London-based KWS Electrical Services Inc. in November 2021 for $194,000.

Consulting firm Stantec assisted developing site and design alternatives that incorporated the ‘Discoveries That Matter’ community branding as well as the County of Lambton logo. The display also features tiered landscaping and lighting in a prominent visual location.
