Sarnia's mayor is disappointed by city council's inaction on a proposed $25,000 contribution to wildfire-ravaged Fort McMurray.
Mike Bradley makes the comment after the Sarnia Police Association and Village of Point Edward each came forward with $5,000 donations to the Red Cross.
On Monday, Sarnia council put off a decision to wait to see what the County of Lambton does.
Mayor Bradley says it was Sarnia's opportunity to be one of the first cities in Canada making a donation.
"I'm hearing about countless other initiatives underway in the community to privately fundraise, everything from bake sales to concerts. So the community gets it. They understand the relationship, they understand fellow Canadians in need," he says. "They're stepping up in many ways to fill the gap that has been left by Sarnia council."
A bake sale fundraiser in support of Fort Mac is taking place Tuesday, May 17 at Bayside Centre from 10am until 2pm.
County council voted at its May 4 meeting in favour of sending a letter to see what the needs were in Fort McMurray and the regional municipality of Wood Buffalo.
The federal government has pledged to match dollar-for-dollar donations, up to $100-million.
