Crackdown at 'The Cove'

Sarnia police have announced an enforcement crackdown at a secluded section of beach at the very west end of Canatara Park.

"The Cove" has developed a reputation recently as a popular spot for large gatherings and loud parties.

Officers have responded to seven calls to the private property since June 1 and have issued eight tickets for open alcohol worth $125 each.

Paramedics also had to help an unconscious male.

Police said it's difficult to get to the beach because of the lack of a direct road and terrain that's hard to navigate.

Cst. John Sottosanti said residents living in the area of Sandy Lane are becoming increasingly frustrated, and city police are taking a zero-tolerance approach.

"This was a problem last year," he said. "Last year we had calls involving everything from intoxicated people to loud noises right into the early morning hours. We responded to one or two overdoses, a number of impaired people, and I believe we also responded to someone that had broken an ankle out there. So, there are numerous concerns."

Cst. Sottosanti said Drewlo Holdings has given them the green light to enforce any trespassing violations or other infractions on their property.

"There will be more signs posted indicating where the property-related restrictions are. There will also be signs posted by the city in regards to no drinking. There will be some clearing of trees and such to allow for better visualization of the area, as well as lighting. At night-time especially, people have found that to be a great place to go and hide. That won't necessarily be the case anymore."

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, gatherings of more than five people are still prohibited under the Ontario Emergency Measures Act which has been extended to June 19, 2020.
