Ministry approves renovation project at Port Lambton school

Plans are in motion to have renovations at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Port Lambton completed in September 2023.

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board (SCCDSB) was recently granted approval by the Ministry of Education to proceed with a $4.2 million renovation project.

Associate Director of Corporate Services Amy Janssens said it's "significant news for this school community."

"Some of the work at the school includes the removal of a very old portapak structure and that includes right now two existing classrooms. So that'll be removed from the school and we'll rebuild those rooms for the students," she said. "We're also including in the space now three new child care rooms for the school so that's great for this community."

Once granted approval from the board of trustees, Janssens said the process to find a contractor will begin "in short order".

“By building additional student and child care spaces at Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School, our government is responding to the needs of local families as the community continues to grow and helping to prepare students for lifelong success,” said Ontario Minister of Education Stephen Lecce in a statement.

Janssens said planning for the project began in July 2020.

Construction is expected to begin in May 2022, read a media release from the SCCDSB.
