The Wallaceburg Thunderhawks are changing their name to the Walpole Island Wild and moving to Walpole Island First Nation permanently next season.
The new Walpole Island Wild will be the only First Nation team in the Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL), according to General Manager and Governor Scott Gorry.
"As far as I know this will be the only First Nation team in the league," Gorry told CK News Today.
Gorry also said the team will be playing at the Walpole Island Sports Complex permanently next season after 50 years of playing in Wallaceburg as the Thunderhawks.
New ownership took over the team last year and some games were played in Walpole Island.
Walpole Island had a Great Lakes Junior C hockey team in the 1990s and won the league championship in 1992-1993, but folded in 1999.
The new team is currently holding a contest to come up with a new team logo. The winner will win $100 and team merchandise.

The deadline is April 30, 2023.
