Walking to beat Huntington's disease

Sarnia-Lambton residents are looking to walk their way to a cure for Huntington's disease (HD).

Huntington Society of Canada (HSC) is hosting its annual Sarnia walk in Canatara Park May 28 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. to help to raise funds and awareness for HD.

Spokesperson Celine Payne said the disease is similar to having Alzheimer's, ALS and Parkinson's all at the same time.

"And not only that, every person who has a parent who has HD has a 50 per cent chance of inheriting it," she said.

In 2019, Payne's mother Yvette passed away from HD at the age of 48. Around that time, Payne was trying to get a Sarnia HD chapter up and running.

"So we're trying to pick that up again," she said. "I have a small little group of people that are helping me, and once we are deemed chapter status we can do a lot more in the community."

Payne said that would include providing more events for social gatherings.

"And just support for people who are suffering with the disease, just kind of form a sense of belonging," she said. "It's a very isolating disease, so the more people that we can get, the better."

Payne has been volunteering with HSC since 2017 and is currently the Vice-President of the society's Young People Affected by HD.
