Storage unit fire damage in the millions

Damage is significant after a fire tore through a storage facility in the city's south end Wednesday afternoon.

Sarnia Fire and Rescue responded to a fire at U-Haul Moving and Storage on Confederation Street at around 3:30 p.m. Large black plumes of smoke were seen billowing from the area.

Fire and Rescue Public Education Officer Mike Otis said the fire was in the B building at the facility. A total of 49 units were destroyed in the blaze.

"We're estimating the loss at around $2 million," said Otis. "A storage unit right, so it could have anything in it, like from motorcycles to chemicals to aerosol cans, anything. I was there myself and you could hear things popping."

Otis said the cause of the blaze is believed to be accidental in nature, however the investigation is ongoing.

"We're working on the pinpointing [the cause], we're pretty sure we've just got to narrow it down to the specifics."

Crews were on scene through the night and Thursday morning dealing with hot-spots and clean-up.
