Community members are hoping to set a new world record now that 'Rocky the snake' will be allowed to grow onto municipal property in Point Edward.
Council members for the Village of Point Edward approved a motion this week to allow Rocky to grow on municipal property towards the Bluewater Bridge.
The motion included a few conditions: the village will not be responsible for maintenance, enforcement (if rocks are thrown into the river), and rocks may not be placed on the grass or sidewalk.
Concerns were raised about the possibility of stones impeding walkways or creating tripping hazards, making it difficult for pedestrians. However, council members agreed if it becomes a problem, they'll deal with it at that time.
"The stones aren't piled up in a pile, they're flush with the gravel that's there," said Councillor Greg Grimes. "We're not building a wall of stones."
Mayor Bev Hand said those who started the initiative are aiming to set a Guinness World Record with Rocky.
Community members were previously asked to check on Rocky in the spring of 2024 to see how many stones survived the winter. The Lambton Area Water Supply System had decided to not spend thousands of dollars to winterize the display.
