Local IODE chapter recognized on Earth Day

The City of Sarnia is recognizing the IODE Errol Egremont Chapter for its efforts when it comes to environmental stewardship.

The organization is the first award recipient of the recently revamped Go-Green Spotlight Environmental Awards program.

A Facebook post on the city's page said the group "went the extra mile" in 2022 by increasing Sarnia's tree canopy, as the group partnered with Climate Action Sarnia-Lambton to plant 41 native trees at Coronation Park.

"With trees delivering a host of environmental impacts including habitat for wildlife, trapping pollution, and absorbing stormwater, we’re recognizing IODE Errol Egremont as eco-leaders in the community," read the Facebook post.

The IODE Errol Egremont Chapter planted the trees after it received a grant from the Department of Canadian Heritage, which was launched to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Chapter Second Vice-President Georgette Parsons and Citizenship Officer Lynn Baarschers accepted the award on behalf of the group on Earth Day (April 21).

IODE is a national women’s charitable organization. The Errol Egremont Chapter was founded in 1980.

Nominations for the Go-Green Spotlight Environmental Awards program will be accepted throughout the year.

Award recipients will be announced by the city every other month.
