A section of Colborne Road that has been a headache for public works crews in the past is undergoing some significant repairs.
Colborne Road will be closed to traffic, between Errol Road West to Guthrie Drive West, for just over a month, beginning Monday, May 1.
Water main work and road repairs will be completed.
Local residents will still be able to access their properties, but transit routes in the area will be detoured.
Sarnia General Manager of Engineering and Operations David Jackson said the work will cost just under $1 million.
"It's about 70-years-old and it's a cast iron water main," said Jackson. "That kind of timeline is when they start seeing a lot of failures. The new one will be made of PVC pipe. The sewers are in fine condition, and the road is okay, so really we're just trying to limit our scope to keep our costs low and to get that problematic water main replaced."
Jackson said in the summer of 2021, the aging water main suffered a large break, flooding the road and resulting in thousands of dollars in repairs.
"When that one breaks, it has the potential to cause damage to neighbouring properties and parking lots," he said. "Because of the size and location, it's a challenging one to repair. When they break, they're typically breaking in the middle of winter when it's not great to be out there doing that kind of work. This should reduce the number of breaks that we're seeing each year."
The project is anticipated to wrap up on Monday, June 5.
