Speed transition zones approved in and out of Camlachie

Drivers will soon have more time to reduce their speed or reach the posted speed limit when entering or leaving Camlachie.

Plympton-Wyoming council has approved new speed transition zones along Camlachie and Egremont Roads.

On Camlachie Road it will begin at Hyslop Line and extend to the existing 50 km/hr sign, and on Egremont Road it will extend for 500 metres from the existing 50 km/hr sign.

"You'll have that transition going through there at 80 [km/h], with the suggested 60 [km/h] and then you'll have to drop down during the transition zone," said Chief Administrative Officer Adam Sobanski.

He said reducing the speed limit could be considered at some point, but it isn't needed right now.

"Given that area is rural, it is meant to move the cars along, you also don't want to decrease the speed too far ahead because you'll just increase the likelihood of speeders," said Sobanski.

Staff compiled the "Traffic Calming Study in the Hamlet of Camlachie" to address speeding concerns and overall safety.

The study found the maximum speed limit of 50 km/h was generally adhered to, with the exception of boundaries where roads transition from rural and residential.

Staff said the cost to install new signage will be allocated to the 2024 operating budget and no additional funding is currently required.

Staff will work on installing signs and lowering speed limits in the next few weeks.

Recently, safety concerns were also addressed to Lambton County Council about the intersection of Lakeshore and Egremont Roads.
