Kettle and Stony First Nation (KSPFN) says a community alert regarding cockroaches published on its website earlier this week is "purely precautionary."
In an update on Wednesday, the First Nation said the confirmed cases of cockroach sightings have been "very minimal" within the First Nation.
"When speaking with exterminators, it has been confirmed that this issue is not isolated to KSPFN, but is part of a broader, area-wide concern," the notice read.
The First Nation said departments are taking appropriate precautionary measures.
"The purpose of the previous notice was to provide helpful steps for preventing cockroach infestations and to inform members that if they are experiencing an issue, they can contact Ontario Works or the Housing Department to inquire about eligibility for assistance with spraying services," the updated alert added.
In an email Thursday, Lambton Public Health said there has been an increase in reports of cockroaches throughout Lambton. Like any insect, changing climates can contribute to fluctuations in population size and location.
To prevent cockroaches from becoming a concern in a building, whether it be a residence or business, you can:
Prevent cockroaches from accessing food, water, and living spaces through cleaning.
Lay traps to monitor population and location of cockroaches.
Seal hiding spots and potential entry points.
Contract a pest control company to do an assessment and necessary clean up.
