Significant weather event declared in Sarnia

A weekend storm has prompted a significant weather event by the City of Sarnia.

It was put into effect at 8 a.m. Sunday.

Environment Canada issued a winter storm warning Saturday morning. An additional 15 centimetres is expected for Sunday with heavy and blowing snow.

The city said a significant weather event is declared when approaching or current weather hazards have the risk to pose significant danger to road users within the community.

Snow removal operations will be prioritized to designated primary routes to ensure the delivery of transit and access for emergency services.

Secondary routes will be completed once the primary routes have been completed.

The city also warns it may take longer than usual to clear roads and bring them back to normal.

Residents are reminded overnight street parking is prohibited during the winter month to facilitate snow removal.

We're asked to avoid daytime street parking to help the process.

Transit users are advised weather may impact transit services, leading to delays and detours.

The city recommends having an at home emergency preparedness kit and when travelling to have a vehicle emergency kit.
