Apartment fire cause deemed accidental

The cause of an apartment fire on Queen Street has been deemed accidental in nature.

The blaze broke out on Monday morning near Talfourd Street.

Sarnia Fire Public Education Officer Mike Otis said due to their quick response, they were able to knock down the fire and keep it to the room of origin.

"Damage is estimated at approximately $6,000," said Otis. "The fire was contained to the room of origin, which was a bedroom, and the residents did exactly what you're supposed to do. They closed the bedroom door and unit door behind them [when evacuating] to help slow the spread of the fire."

Otis said the unit had working smoke alarms and all of the occupants escaped.

"They noticed the fire, got out, closed the doors, pulled the pull-station to alert the whole building and called 9-1-1," he said. "We rescued two cats and there were no injuries to report."

He believed Sarnia police were done investigating and that all of the residents of the building, other than those living in the impacted unit, were allowed to return right away.
