Police, fire remind boaters to be fully prepared this season

The weather is getting warmer which means more people will be taking their boats on the water.

Sarnia Fire and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding residents to wear their lifejackets while on the water.

Police said 131 people lost their lives in boating incidents on OPP-patrolled waterways in the last five years.

Sarnia Fire Public Information Officer Mike Otis said there are things to remember when getting out on the water.

"All of the rules of being out on the boat and all of the safety factors, there are many to list but life jacket, CO safety and fire safety," he said.

Meanwhile, boaters are reminded alcohol and drug impairment, hazardous waterways and operator inexperience are among other factors.

Otis said there are some things people don't consider while operating a boat.

"Engines give off carbon monoxide and things like that people might not think about when it comes to boats but they are a factor," he said. " Fire safety even on boats, having a fire extinguisher handy."

Falling overboard and capsized vessels remain the leading causes of OPP-investigated boating and paddling deaths year-after- year.

Recently, local emergency crews were called to two incidents in Point Edward and Sarnia.

Otis said the incidents are not showcasing an abnormal pattern.

"Anytime people are in danger it's concerning but  I wouldn't associate it with any kind of pattern or anything like that," he said.

Lambton County OPP said marine units will be canvassing the St. Clair River and Lake Huron all of the way up to Grand Bend during the summer.

Police are reminding boaters to make sure your vessel is properly functioning and equipped and check the weather forecast to determine if it is safe to go out.
