Severe thunderstorms move through the region Friday

Portions of southern Ontario are experiencing rain and high wind gusts Friday night.

As of 9 p.m. on Friday, Environment Canada had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Grey, and Perth, and northern Wellington Counties.

Forecasters began tracking a line of storms moving east from lower Michigan.

These storms may include heavy downpours, and wind gusts up to 110 kilometres per hour. Environment Canada also says there is a risk of a tornado.

"Local utility outages are likely. Heavy rain may cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility," read the warning from Environment Canada. "Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail."

The weather agency had also issued a tornado warning for southern Grey County. A storm with tornado-forming capability was reported just after 8 p.m. on Friday about five kilometres southwest of Varney.
