Local chambers of commerce are commending the federal government's efforts to bolster Canada's relationship with Mexico.
A joint statement from chambers of commerce in Chatham-Kent, Leamington, Sarnia-Lambton, Wallaceburg, Amherstburg, and Windsor-Essex was issued Friday, recognizing the value of Mexican workers and institutions within the region.
"Our Chambers proudly recognize both the value of Canada's strengthened relationship with Mexico and the direct contributions of Mexican workers to our communities," said Rory Ring, president and CEO of the Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce. "From sustaining our greenhouse economy and ensuring food security to supporting small businesses and enriching multicultural diversity, the Canada-Mexico partnership is a story of resilience, collaboration, and shared prosperity."
Mexico isn't only a strong trading partner, but it's workforce is essential to Southwestern Ontario's agricultural sector. Roughly 12,000 to 14,000 employees work in the region every year, supporting greenhouse growers, family farms, and food producers.
The Mexican Consulate is located in Leamington, providing services and advocacy to those workers and drawing Mexican citizens to the area.
"Leamington sees every day the positive impact of Canada's strong relationship with Mexico, from supporting our agricultural economy to enriching our cultural diversity. Strengthening these ties ensures lasting economic growth, food security, and vibrant community connections that benefit our entire region." stated Lemington Chamber of Commerce General Manager Wendy Parson.
According to officials, the presence of Mexican workers in the area strengthens multiple layers of local economies. It increases demand in small businesses, retail, transportation, and service sectors.
It also brings diversity to the region, allowing Ontarians to reap the benefits of their vibrant culture in everything from food to art to music.
"This partnership is instrumental in driving economic stability, ensuring food security, supporting our rural and urban communities, and building stronger cultural bridges," said Windsor Essex Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ryan Donally. "The Canada-Mexico connection shows how global relationships deliver tangible benefits to local people and local businesses."
