A transport truck driver accused of cutting through Sarnia in order to avoid Highway 402 traffic has been charged in connection with a three-vehicle collision at Exmouth Street and Murphy Road.
Police said shortly before 2 p.m. on Sunday, the big rig rear-ended a pickup truck, causing it to collide with a minivan that had slowed for traffic.
Minor injuries were reported, however, no one needed to be taken to the hospital.
According to police, the transport truck driver told officers he was rerouted off the highway because of a collision, which was later found to be untrue. Police allege the driver chose to drive off the truck route to avoid delays.
The truck driver was charged with careless driving and disobeying a sign (under the Highway Traffic Act), and disobeying a sign - heavy truck in a restricted area (under the City of Sarnia's By-law).
The Sarnia Police Service is using this incident as a reminder for commercial drivers that there is zero tolerance for detouring through the city in order to "jump the line" on Highway 402, approaching the Blue Water Bridge.
Lambton OPP has also been working in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation to target unsafe driving behaviors on the highway.
